Study Permit Proof of Funds: More Is Not Always Better

Study Permit Proof of Funds: More Is Not Always Better
When applying for a Canadian study permit, some applicants submit additional bank statements and investment records hoping to strengthen their application. However, any funds presented as evidence of financial capacity may require an explanation of their source.
A recent Federal Court decision illustrates this point: even if one account may contain enough money to cover the proposed studies, an officer may still examine the source of other investments relied on in the application.
Preparing financial evidence therefore involves more than showing a balance. It should explain who owns the funds, how they were accumulated, whether they are consistent with the stated income, and whether they are available for study expenses.
For example, large deposits may need supporting transfer records. Financial support from a spouse or parent should be supported by evidence of their income and savings. Term deposits and investments may also require an explanation of when and how the funds can be accessed.
When reviewing study permit financial documents, we look at whether account balances, income records and fund transfers tell a consistent financial story. A substantial balance with little supporting explanation can create additional questions.
The goal is to demonstrate sufficient, accessible funds with a clear source. Provide all required disclosures truthfully and support the funds you rely on, rather than simply adding more assets.
If you are unsure which funds to rely on or how to document their source, contact us for an assessment.
