Express Entry
- 加拿大工作经验即将满一年、两年或三年;
- 语言成绩正在准备提升;
- 配偶语言成绩或学历认证即将完成;
- 省提名申请正在推进;
- 学历认证 ECA 即将完成;
Express Entry
Should You Create an Express Entry Profile Early? What Applicants Need to Know About the Tie-Breaking Rule
In Express Entry applications, many applicants often hear the same piece of advice: “Create your profile first, enter the pool early, and secure an advantage under the tie-breaking rule.”
This advice is partly correct, but it is not complete. For some applicants, entering the pool early may indeed provide an advantage. However, for others, if their CRS score is clearly insufficient, their information or documents are not yet ready, or they have little realistic chance of receiving an invitation within one year, entering the pool too early may not have much practical value.
Therefore, whether an applicant should enter the Express Entry pool early cannot be answered simply with “yes” or “no.” It depends on the applicant’s specific circumstances.
1. What Does It Mean to Enter the Express Entry Pool?
Express Entry is the electronic system used by the Canadian federal government to manage economic immigration applications. Eligible applicants may create an Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool.
After entering the pool, the system calculates the applicant’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors such as age, education, language test results, Canadian work experience, foreign work experience, spouse or common-law partner factors, arranged employment, and provincial nomination. IRCC conducts draws regularly and invites applicants who meet the requirements of a particular draw and have a high enough CRS score to submit a permanent residence application.
In simple terms, entering the pool is only the first step. Entering the pool does not mean receiving an invitation, nor does it mean that a permanent residence application has already been submitted. Only after receiving an ITA, or Invitation to Apply, can the applicant formally submit a permanent residence application.
2. Why Do People Say Applicants Should Enter the Pool Early?
The main reason for “entering the pool early” is the tie-breaking rule in Express Entry.
In each draw, IRCC sets the invitation category, the number of invitations, and the minimum CRS score. If the minimum score for a particular draw is 517, it does not necessarily mean that all applicants with 517 points will be invited.
IRCC first invites applicants with scores higher than 517. If there are not enough remaining spots to invite all applicants with exactly 517 points, IRCC will apply the tie-breaking time. In other words, among applicants with the same CRS score, those who submitted their Express Entry profiles earlier may be ranked ahead.
3. What Does the Tie-Breaking Time Actually Do?
The tie-breaking time is not randomly selected. It is essentially generated automatically based on the number of invitations in that round, candidates’ CRS ranking, and the time when their profiles were submitted.
Therefore, the tie-breaking time only affects one group of applicants: those whose CRS score is exactly equal to the minimum invited score in that round.
4. Why “The Earlier, the Better” Is Not Accurate
The issue is that an Express Entry profile is not valid forever. An Express Entry profile is valid for only one year. If an applicant does not receive an invitation within one year, the profile will expire and the applicant will need to create a new profile. Once a new profile is created, it will have a new submission time.
This means that the advantage of “establishing an earlier pool entry time” cannot be preserved indefinitely. If an applicant’s current CRS score is clearly below recent draw scores and there is no realistic short-term pathway to increase the score, entering the pool too early may have limited practical value.
5. Who Should Consider Entering the Pool Early?
Applicants whose scores are already close to recent draw cut-offs may benefit from entering the pool early. Applicants who qualify under a priority category, expect their scores to increase significantly within one year, or need an Express Entry profile for a provincial nomination program may also consider creating a profile earlier.
6. Who May Not Need to Enter the Pool Too Early?
Applicants with clearly low CRS scores and no short-term pathway to gain points may not need to rush into the pool. Applicants whose language scores are still not ideal, whose work experience has not yet met the requirements, or whose information is not yet clear should first complete a careful assessment.
7. Can Information Be Updated After Entering the Pool?
Yes. After an applicant enters the Express Entry pool, they may update their profile if their language test results, work experience, education, marital status, spouse information, provincial nomination, or other circumstances change.
Normal updates to the profile usually do not automatically invalidate the original submission time. However, if the profile expires, is withdrawn, or the applicant creates a new profile, the new profile will have a new submission time.
8. Do Not Ignore Status Planning
For applicants inside Canada, whether to enter the pool is only one part of immigration planning. The more important question is often how long the applicant can maintain valid temporary status.
If Express Entry does not result in an invitation in the short term and the applicant’s status is about to expire, they must consider a status transition plan in advance.
9. Conclusion
Express Entry is not safer simply because an applicant enters the pool earlier. A more reasonable standard is whether the applicant has a realistic chance of being invited within the next year, or whether they need an Express Entry profile to support another immigration pathway, such as a provincial nomination.
In other words, the key to Express Entry is not “the earlier, the better.” It is about entering the right track at the right time, with accurate information.
