Ontario OINP Updates EOI Scoring: Higher Earnings Can Now Earn Up to 10 Points

Ontario has recently updated the Expression of Interest (EOI) scoring system under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), increasing the points available to applicants with higher Canadian earnings.

The new scoring rules took effect on October 5, 2026, and were announced on October 7.

1. New Earnings History Scoring

Under the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream, applicants who earned at least CAD $80,000 in a single year within the past five years may now receive the maximum 10 points under the Canadian Work Experience: Earnings History factor.

The updated scoring system is as follows:

Annual Canadian EarningsEOI Points
$80,000 or more10
$70,000–$79,9998
$50,000–$69,9996
$30,000–$49,9994
Below $30,0000

Previously, the maximum score under this factor was 8 points.

2. Current Salary Is Not the Determining Factor

Applicants should understand that these points are based on historical Canadian earnings, not their current salary or the salary stated in a job offer.

Applicants must provide a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Notice of Assessment (NOA) demonstrating qualifying earnings within the past five years.

Earnings from different years cannot be combined to meet the threshold.

For example, an applicant who earned $85,000 in Canada in 2024 may qualify for the maximum 10 points, even if their current annual salary is below $80,000.

3. What Does This Mean for OINP Applicants?

This change may benefit applicants who have previously earned higher incomes while working in Canada.

According to the announced changes, affected existing EOI profiles have been automatically updated, meaning applicants generally do not need to register again.

However, a higher EOI score does not guarantee an invitation to apply for provincial nomination.

Applicants must still meet all other stream eligibility requirements and remain competitive under Ontario's invitation selection process.

4. Important Reminder for Applicants

If you are considering permanent residence through the OINP, it may be worthwhile to review your CRA Notices of Assessment from the past five years.

Even if your current salary is relatively modest, your previous Canadian earnings may provide a scoring advantage.

Successful immigration planning requires more than meeting minimum eligibility requirements. Understanding the latest selection criteria can make a meaningful difference.
